1. "On the Way to Class"
Instant film photography is a wonderful thing. Along with instant gratification, the perfect imperfections of every shot make instant photography more than a novelty. With this blog, I would take one photo with an instant film camera (Polaroid 250 Land Camera, Polaroid 600, or Fujifilm Instax Mini 8) on the way to one of my classes and analyze the result. The first post or two may deal with some of my existing photography to explain some of the fundamentals and science of my cameras and the chemical processes.
2. "Nature Can Do That?"
3. "Absolutely Smashing"
Tennis is a game that is simple to pick up, but nearly impossible to master. What interests me just as much as playing the game, however, is the rest of the game that players seem to keep on the back burner—racquet and string technologies, the big and small tournaments around the world, the professional players and their stories—the list goes on and on. I could talk about tennis for days and I just might with this blog.

So, what should I pick? I'll probably be thinking about the topic for this blog the entire bus ride home for Labor Day weekend. I know I won't be writing about all of my interests combined . Luckily, in choosing a topic, I know I might be able to make one of my passions one of yours. At the very least, I'll post plenty of photos, videos, and more to keep you entertained.

Hi Kevin, I really like your first two ideas. I think the photography one will be the most accessible for your audience. It would be really cool (if you decided to do that one) to explain not only why you chose to take a certain picture, but also why you picked the filter or lens setting that you did. Then you could explain how different adjustments convey a different message to the audience (e.g. different lighting might make a different tone, etc.). You could also include before and after editing pictures.
ReplyDeleteHi there! I totally agree that biomimicry is one of the most fascinating science topics that we have yet to learn from. And even if you were to talk about things that we already do (not the infinite future possibilities) to imitate nature from an engineering standpoint, you could go on for days...
ReplyDeleteTennis: great sport, I totally hear you, man. You and I could talk shop one of these days (although I haven't been able to get on the courts recently), but personally, when someone is writing about a sport I'm less interested in, such as baseball, I would find it harder to pay attention. So while you could certainly write a fantastic blog on tennis, your other two topics would definitely hit a broader audience. Photography is something that can be appreciated by even those without photography experience (like me) and biomimicry is just flipping awesome that also relates to the daily lives of people. So my thinking is either 1 or 2.

ReplyDeleteSuch unique potential approaches! I love the specificity here, Kevin. I agree with Taylor's observation that your "On Your Way to Class" photography idea or "Mother Nature Can Do That?" idea might have more universal appeal to a broader audience.
ReplyDeleteNot to rail against tennis, of course, but this singular sport might engage a smaller niche audience than the other approaches.
I'm certainly looking forward to learn what you pick!
First off, I love the setup of this blog. It is very unique and different is this blog automatically stands out to me! Second of all, it is great that you have options to pick from , and these topics are very interesting and engaging! So, I can't wait to find out what you chose!
